Jailed Awramba Times editor wins CNN’s Free Press Africa Award

 

By Awramba Times (Phoenix, Arizona),12 October 2013Jailed Ethiopian journalist Woubshet Taye has been honored with the Free Press Africa prize at the CNN MultiChoice African Journalist Awards ceremony held on 12th October in Capetown, South Africa.

Established in August 1995 to encourage, promote and recognize excellence in African journalism, the CNN MultiChoice African Journalist Awards are among the most prestigious and respected prizes for journalists across the continent.

The Free Press Africa Award is given to journalists working under extreme circumstances or those who are paying a price for doing their job.

Birhan Tesfaye, Woubshet’s wife, and his son, received a standing ovation from a gathering of leading African and international journalists, business leaders and media stakeholders when they accepted the award on his behalf.Woubshet was imprisoned in June 2011 on fabricated charges of terrorism and convicted to 14 years in prison.
