Somalia:Journalist Killed

7 July 2013

Unknown Gunmen shot dead a journalist in Galkayo Somalia on Sunday evening. The journalist Libaan Abdullahi Farah known as “Liibaan Qaran” worked with SBC and KalsanTV.Galkayo straddles the border between Somalia's northern semi-autonomous region of Puntland and the region of Galmudug. The motive behind the attack remain unknown.

This murder brings the total number of Somali journalists killed through assassination to three and the overall killed journalists in Somalia to five this year. Libaan Abdullahi Farah was on his way home from work on Sunday night around 7:00pm local time. He was shot four to six times on the throat, chest, heart and legs. He was rushed to MSF Hospital in the Galkayo south, where he was confirmed dead.

Witnesses said that the journalist was arguing with unknown caller over the phone, before the two masked gunmen shot him. The National Union of Somali Journalists has condemned the attack. The murder of the late Farah comes amid preparation for local government elections in the regions under the Puntland administration and thus raises fears for the safety of journalists.

NUSOJ has called for the Puntland administration to come up with mechanism in ensuring the safety of the journalists during the coming elections. Earlier this month the African Union’s Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Expression,Pansy Tlakula called for African countries to put in place mechanism to protect journalists working in conflict areas such as Somalia
