Tanzania attack on Editor Politically motivated

31 May 2013

An attack on New Habari Corporation Managing Editor Absalom Kibanda in March was politically motivated, the Tanzania Editors Forum (TEF) said in a report released Thursday (May 30th).

Kibanda, who is also chairman of the TEF, was beaten outside his home in Dar es Salaam, with his fingernails and teeth pulled out, his finger cut and his left eye damaged, Tanzania's The Citizen reported. He was flown to South Africa for treatment, where he remains hospitalised.

The report alleges that security officers were involved in the attack on Kibanda, intending to spark conflict between the opposition party Chama Cha Demokrasia na Maendeleo (CHADEMA) and another prominent political party.

"Some of the interviewees alleged that CHADEMA has been given special training by foreign agents to collude with some unethical security personnel to engage in such acts as kidnap, attack and even kill prominent people in the country including journalists," the report said.

CHADEMA Secretary General Willibrod Slaa declined to comment on the report, as he had not yet read its contents.
